I THINK SCRAPBOOKING IS A WAY OF LOOKING INTO THE ARTIST’S SOUL
I think the way I scrap is a direct reflection of my personality. I am typically a cheerful and happy person that likes the ‘little details’ of life. I love organisation and tend toward a ‘cleaner’ look. I have always enjoyed sewing, and frequently sewed Christmas gifts for friends and family before I began scrapbooking. This love for sewing transitioned to my layouts, where I often include some sort of sewing element – whether it’s using buttons, fabrics, hand- or machine stitching.
JOURNALLING IS SO IMPORTANT – AND PERSONAL.
I always reserve journalling for the end, because I believe that is the most personal aspect of the layout. Years from now, the picture will be my visual reminder of the event, however the journalling documents my personal feelings at the time that it took place. I love that scrapbooking helps document both visual and emotional memories.
SCRPABOOKING INDULGES MY LOVE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY AND MY NEED TO EXPRESS MYSELF CREATIVELY.
I often use scrapbooking as a creative outlet. I come from a culture where most people don’t like pictures taken of themselves, and don’t talk about themselves at all. I have noticed a change in the mindset of my family and friends since I started scrapbooking. They initially refused to let me take pictures of them, and absolutely did not want to be the subject of a layout. Over time, they have grown accustomed to me and my camera. They no longer shy away. This allows me to create layouts that accurately represent the loving and giving individuals that I interact with on a day to day basis.
REMAIN TRUE TO YOURSELF
When scrapbooking, I have a strong desire to remain true to myself. Although I am addicted to idea books and online galleries, I try to remember who I am as an artist and an individual. I may incorporate some popular techniques into my layouts (and continually strive to improve them) however, I avoid compromising my style because of an industry trend.
I LOVE FLOWERS (AND NOT JUST BECAUSE I WORK FOR PRIMA!)
Living in Hawaii, flowers are a way of life for us. I love flowers of all types, including chipboard, paper, silk, plastic and metal flower embellishments. I enjoy using flowers on pages with black and white pictures to add colour, incorporating flowers into titles, using them for borders and including them as everyday embellishments.
ALTER FLOWERS TO MAKE THEM YOUR OWN
I frequently alter flowers to fit the theme of the layout. I like to create new flower centers, sew on them, ink/stamp and emboss on flower petals, and cut them up to change the look of the flower itself. Flower embellishments are so versatile, and the altering possibilities are endless.
