INKING IT UP

Inking is a great way to give your projects added interest. This versatile medium allows you to achieve some great effects from subtle highlights to intense distressing. All you need is a little know-how.

Edging cardstock and paper with ink is probably the most popular and easiest ink application. Hold the piece you would like to ink, at a slight angle, then run the ink pad lightly along all of the edges. You can achieve different results, by angling the ink pad in different ways. Holding it almost upright while you swipe, will give a very minimal colour, while a sharper angle over the cardstock, can give a fuller, almost sponged effect, which is great for corners.
Swiping the ink pad over an area, can also give a very effective result. Simply lay your cardstock or paper on a flat surface, then place the ink pad onto it and slide it down. This will leave a spray of colour on the surface. You could also experiment with the motion you swipe, whether that be the direction, such as circular or straight, or the size of the swipes, such as small circles, a long line the length of the piece or small ‘dabs’.

These are some of the funky effects that you can achieve with an ink pad. The top left hand corner was achieved by inking the edges, then dabbing the edge of the ink pad over the surface. The next used an ink pad to colour the whole area. Simply dab the ink pad directly onto the surface, until you are happy with the colour. The bottom left section shows the effect of short swipes, and the bottom right was achieved by applying the ink pad in a large circular motion.

1.
Experiment with different coloured inks, for varied effects. Try the same effect with a sepia distress ink, a colour a few shades darker than your cardstock, as well as a VersaMark ink. Each of these will give a completely different result.

2.
There are a range of sprayable inks available, which are great for achieving a mottled effect.

3.
Add extra colour and interest to journaling tags and accents, by applying an ink effect to the background, then allowing it to dry and writing over the top.
