Paper Mache Pulp embellishments
By Julie Heard
Here’s a fun and inexpensive way to try your hand at making your own embellishments. It’s a very simple technique using an old children’s art activity, Paper Mache.
Whilst you can make some cool embellishments using the traditional paper mache trick – we’re going to have a go using paper mache pulp, this will allow you to have greater control over finer details in your work.
For this Project you will need:
Paper towel
White glue (there are heaps of simple recipes available online)
Blender
Strainer/colander
Baking paper
Method:
Step One:
Rip up your paper towel into small pieces and place in blender. Add a small amount of water and give it a good blending till it’s really broken down. Strain out water – might need to give the pulp a bit of a squeezing to help get it all out and then mix the pulp with one or two tablespoons of the white glue – you want it to be a wet mixture but not runny.
Step two:
Draw up some designs you’d like to make on a piece of baking paper. Using your pictures as a guideline, fill in the designs with the paper mache pulp mixture - pressing it in together as you fill the space. If you have some really fine sections then using the handle of a spoon will help push the pulp back within the lines of your design.
Step three:
Sit it aside to dry. You can place it out in the sun if you’d like to make the drying process quicker or even sit them on a tray in a low heat oven for faster results.
Once your pieces are dry they should be quite hard and solid. Now you can go ahead and paint them to use on a layout.
